The produce for the month of May is not as well known as some fruit, but packs a punch in flavor and health benefits. The produce which is a must try for this month is pomegranate. Pomegranates have a sweet, delicious taste and are full of health benefits.

Pomegranates are a good source of manganese, a mineral which helps to form your bone and joint tissue. It is a good source of fiber which helps to keep your gut functioning well. The fiber as well as the polyphenols in pomegranate provide sources of food for the health promoting microbes in your gut. When your gut microbes are healthy, they help to support the optimal health and function of almost every part of your body.

Pomegranates are also a good source of vitamin C which helps to optimize your immune system. Vitamin C is also needed to make the protein collagen which helps to keep your tendons and ligaments strong and your skin looking youthful. To add to these benefits pomegranates are also a good source of potassium which helps to lower your blood pressure and keep your heart healthy.

The good news for your body doesn’t end there. Pomegranates are also a source of folate and thiamine. Folate helps to make and repair your DNA and thiamine helps to create energy from the food you eat. To enjoy a pomegranate, try adding some pomegranate arils to your yoghurt as a snack, sprinkle some arils on top of a salad, or add on top of a Corn Thins slice with some cream cheese.
