Having a food safe lunch is important. If you’re not sure where to start here are some easy tips to make sure your lunch is food safe:

  1. Clean Hands and Food

Before you prepare a school lunch make sure that everyone who is helping to make the lunch washes their hands. Make sure the lunchbox and utensils are clean before using. This will help to prevent germs from spreading onto the food and keep the food safe.

  1. Add Cooling

Use an insulated lunchbox to help keep the food at the right temperature for food safety. Try adding an ice brick or frozen water bottle to keep the food cool until lunch.

Keep the lunchbox out of direct sunlight during storage to prevent the food warming too much and too quickly. If there is a fridge at school store the lunchbox in the fridge.

  1. Be Aware of High-Risk Foods

Certain foods spoil quickly, these include meat, poultry, seafood (tinned does not need cooling if can is unopened) and soft cheeses. Also, eggs, dairy products, and cooked rice and pasta. These foods need to have special care taken to keep cool before they are eaten.

Good news for lovers of Corn Thins products, these do not need any refrigeration and can be kept at room temperature for easy enjoyment.

Take home message: By following these three easy steps you can make sure that your school lunches stay food safe and can be enjoyed.
