Are you a fan of white bread or white rice, crackers or pasta and can’t see the big deal of making the switch to wholegrain? While these choices do have their place in an overall balanced diet, making most of your grain choices wholegrain have many health and planet benefits.

Wholegrains can include brown, red, or black rice, wholegrain pasta, wholegrain bread, wholegrain couscous, wholegrain containing crackers and crispbreads like Corn Thins slices, oats, and quinoa. There are so many ways you can add wholegrains into your diet.

Here are four of many reasons to include more serves of wholegrains in your day:

Fibre

Fibre is important for many reasons including helping your gut to function at its best as well as to feed the health promoting microbes in your gut. Adults need between 25-38g of dietary fibre and most are not achieving this goal.

Fibre plays many important roles including promoting proper digestion. Fibre also helps to reduce your risk of developing certain cancers including colorectal cancer, type two diabetes and heart disease and stroke. Fibre helps to keep your blood pressure at a lower level and makes achieving and maintaining a healthy weight easier as it helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Planet Friendly

Wholegrains stay intact during processing unlike refined grains. As a result, less of the grain becomes waste and more food is produced from the same amount of land.

Vitamins and Minerals

Wholegrains contain the whole grain of the plant. This means that they are packed with all the nutrients of a wholegrain. This includes B vitamins which are needed to make energy from the food you eat. B vitamins also support the function of your brain and metabolism.

Other minerals you can find in wholegrains include iron, magnesium, selenium, phosphorous, copper, and zinc. Wholegrains can boast a huge seventy five percent more nutrients that refined grains.

Upgrade In Taste

Wholegrains are delicious! Wholegrains have a nutty, earthy flavour and have a very satisfying texture. Wholegrains are versatile and can be sued in a number of ways and in different dishes. This includes in salads, soups, desserts, and risottos.

Take home message: Upgrade your diet by including the whole grain over refined grain choices. Your health, taste buds, and planet will reap the benefits.
