Cottage cheese is nutrient dense dairy food. It is a great choice to include as it helps to lower the rate sugar is taken from your blood to the cells of your body as it is considered a low glycaemic index food. Cottage cheese is a high protein, calcium rich cheese with a creamy and delicious flavor. If you are following a lower carbohydrate diet it is a great choice as per one hundred grams contains on four grams of carbohydrate.

Cottage cheese is a versatile food which can be enjoyed in many ways. Here are three different ideas to enjoy:

 

  1. Top on A Corn Thins slice

This idea is so easy and very filling. Simply spread cottage cheese on top of a Corn Thins slice and add your favourite extras on top. E.g. for a sweet tooth try berries and cinnamon or if you prefer savoury try sliced tomato, basil and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and pepper. This is a must try combination. Mix cottage cheese with berries, which will provide your body many nutrients including fibre to help slow the release of sugar into your body. Berries like strawberries have a very low amount of fructose if you are seeking a snack or meal with a lower glycaemic load. Add into the mix your favorite nuts, I recommend slivered almonds which adds additional protein, healthy fats, and fibre as well as the perfect crunch. For additional flavor try adding a dash of vanilla extract or a sprinkle of cinnamon.

 

  1. Pancakes

Instead of opting for pancakes with honey or maple syrup on top try a spread of cottage cheese with berries and cinnamon. Perfection! This mix will keep you feeling fuller for longer and not put your blood sugar on a rollercoaster ride which will end in a sugar crash soon after.
