Produce of the Month

The produce of the month of September likes to keep it hot. Chillies are the star produce for this month and pack a punch of flavour to any meal or snack or beverage you add it too. Chillies give your body a good source of vitamin C which is an antioxidant that supports an optimal functioning immune system and is needed to make the protein collagen. Chillies are also a source of vitamin B6 which is needed to make red blood cells and plays a role in making energy from the food you eat.
Chillies are also a source of vitamin K1 which is needed for your normal blood clotting. Also, potassium which helps to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range by helping to lower blood pressure. Also, copper which is important to keep your bones strong. Chillies are also a source of beta carotene. Beta carotene is then turned into vitamin A in your body. Like vitamin C, vitamin A supports an optimal functioning immune system.
Not only are you giving your body these nutrients but also other plant compounds which act as antioxidants to fight off excess free radicals in your body. Excess free radicals can cause damage and disease to the cells of your body.
There is some evidence that adding chillies to a meal can have a fat burning effect and help to keep you feeling fuller for longer. However, chillies are not a magic pill and work to support weight loss and to achieve a healthy weight in conjunction with other healthy lifestyle choices.
There are many ways to use chillies. Ideas can be adding to your favourite sauce, hot chocolate, or juice. I like to add chilli on top of a Corn Thins slice with cottage cheese. This is the perfect combination and worth a try.
