Are you following a lower carbohydrate diet but still want to be able to enjoy a burger? The good news is that by tweaking an ingredient or two a burger can still be on the menu if you are following a lower carbohydrate diet.

The first and most important part to swap is the bun. A regular burger bun contains an average of 20-25g of carbohydrate. In comparison two Original Corn Thins slices contain only 8.5g of carbohydrate and include dietary fiber which can slow the release of sugar into your blood.

The second step is to select a quality lean meat. Good choices can be 5-star beef mince patties or chicken breast or fish fillets. You may like to skip the meat all together by opting for a chickpea or kidney beans patty or some grilled tofu or halloumi. Another protein choice to add could be some cooked eggs.

Your body will thank you for loading up on the vegetables to add more fibre. Good choices can be baby spinach, lettuce, grated carrot, sliced mushrooms, sauteed onions, and sliced tomato. Adding some healthy fat through a spread of mashed avocado can be a great way to add some fruit to your burger as well.

Be mindful of the sauces which are often loaded with sugar and carbohydrate. There are no or low carbohydrate sauces available or you can skip these and try using herbs and spices instead. Herbs and spices add not only flavour but also additional antioxidants to the meal.

Take home message: With some smart swaps and choices enjoying a burger meal can still be on the menu if you are following a lower carbohydrate diet.
